Viewers were invited to read a handwritten book of short narrative passages. Each one was titled with a type of herbal tea. When they reached the countertop, I sat across from them and took orders for the type of tea they were interested in. For viewers that were indecisive, I suggested a flavor personally. The tea was portioned into handmade mugs, mugs were returned when empty. The countertop served as both a space for casual conversation, nourishment, and performance.
Throughout the night, the performance space was filled with people passively holding warm mugs as they conversed or watched other pieces. From my vantage point, I often heard discussions surrounding the type of tea each participant was drinking. Mugs were returned often with a compliment about the flavor, or with the tea-drinker’s own story about a tea experience.
